HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt and FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, M.D., will travel to the People’s Republic of China during the week of Nov. 17, 2008, for consultations with their Chinese counterparts. During this week, as part of an ongoing strategy to address the food safety issues in both countries and to share ideas to address global food safety, U.S. and Chinese government officials will conduct two workshops in Beijing.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) draft assessment on the safety of Bisphenol A, also called BPA, was criticized earlier this week by a panel of experts convened by an advisory subcommittee to the agency. They said the new exposure safety level proposed by the FDA should be at least ten times lower. BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastics, including those used in plastic baby bottles and drinking water bottles and the lining of metal food packaging.

Following the recent scare in China where over 50,000 babies have fallen ill and four have died from ingesting baby milk contaminated with melamine, the European Commission (EC) is banning all imports into the European Union (EU) of Chinese baby foods that contain any traces of milk. The EU will also be doing random tests of all Chinese food products containing more than 15 per cent milk.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a ruling that allows food producers to irradiate spinach and iceberg lettuce to kill foodborne bacteria like E. coli and salmonella that can cause people to become ill. The action is intended to reduce outbreaks of foodborne illnesses, of which there have been several in recent years, including the E. coli outbreak of 2006 where fresh bagged spinach was removed from the shelves.
