The Food and Drug Administration’s new (Aug. 22) regulation that will allow irradiation pasteurization to be used on fresh spinach and iceberg lettuce to kill illness-causing bacteria is a step that two Iowa State University professors have long advocated. Dennis Olson is a professor of animal science and directs Iowa State’s Linear Accelerator Facility, one of only two commercial-sized irradiation facilities for food research and demonstration on a U.S. university campus.

An infectious ocean-dwelling bacterium found in oysters and other shellfish kills its host’s cells by causing them to burst, providing the invader with a nutrient-rich meal, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found. The bacterium, a relative of the one that causes cholera, co-opts and makes fatal a normal cell process that starving or stressed organisms use to disassemble and recycle expendable proteins into more vital metabolites.

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday that California food company S&S Foods LLC, based in Azusa, is recalling approximately 153,630 pounds of frozen ground beef because it could be carrying E. coli O157:H7, a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning.

In keeping with the Government’s commitment to food safety, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is taking precautionary actions to prevent the implicated source of the Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak in the United States (U.S.) from entering Canada. Specifically, shipments of jalapeño and Serrano peppers from Mexico are being held by the CFIA pending laboratory results. Shipments found to be contaminated will not be allowed in the marketplace.
